Fonyód is a small city in Hungary on the southern shore of Lake Balaton.
Fonyód’s charm lies less in monumental landmarks than in the rhythm of lakeside life. Early mornings unfold with a soft mist over the lake, perfect for a quiet jog along the promenade before the sun lifts the dunes of the popular beach. Local cafés open their shutters to the water, serving freshly brewed espresso alongside pastries that still smell of the bakery next door. In the afternoon, the harbour fills with modest fishing boats, offering a glimpse of a working lakeside community that coexists with the summer influx. The town’s compact size makes it easy to wander on foot, allowing visitors to absorb subtleties such as the red‑brick façades that echo the Austro‑Hungarian era without the crowds of larger resorts.
While July and August dominate the tourist calendar, the shoulder months reveal a different palette. In late September the lake’s waters turn a deep, reflective blue, and the surrounding vineyards begin to harvest, inviting low‑key wine‑tasting tours that combine a glass of Olaszrizling with a stroll through the nearby hills. Autumn also brings local festivals that celebrate the town’s Germanic roots, featuring folk music and savory dishes like lángos topped with smoked paprika. Winter, though quiet, offers a crisp, windswept shoreline ideal for brisk walks and the occasional ice‑fishing venture, a pastime that locals still cherish when the lake freezes thinly along the northern edge.
A little‑known advantage for the active traveller is the seasonal bike‑share scheme that links Fonyód with neighbouring lakeside towns such as Balatonboglár and Zamárdi. The flat, well‑maintained paths follow the historic railway line, converting an old transport artery into a leisurely route lined with reeds and occasional pop‑up markets. Renting a bike for a day costs less than a coffee in the town centre, and the ease of hopping off at small coves lets you discover quiet swimming spots untouched by the main beach crowds. The system’s integration with local e‑ticketing means you can plan a multi‑stop ride without worrying about separate rentals, making spontaneous explorations both affordable and environmentally friendly.

It is the seat of Fonyód District.
[edit] The first mention of Fonyód was in a letter of Saint Ladislaus from 1082, as the village Funoldi. In 1232, the village was included into the lands of the Tihany Abbey. Maps from the 14th century show Fonyód as an island (with Balaton being larger), with a castle. The castle was occupied and destroyed in 1575 during the Turkish invasion, with no one living in the village by 1580. After the Turkish occupation, Fonyód remained uninhabited until the 19th century. The construction of a railway around Lake Balaton greatly contributed to the village's development. By 1900, Fonyód had become a holiday resort, and by 1910 over a thousand visitors were arriving each year. Fonyód attained town status in 1989.
[edit] The town is famous for its mineral water which is bottled there under the name Fonyódi and is owned by the Croatian company, Jana (part of Agrokor). The electronics producer cms manufacturing (owned by the Austrian cms electronics) and the Italian electronics device producer Datalogic operate factories in the town.
