Eskdale Green is a small village in Cumbria at one end of the Eskdale Valley. The hamlet of Boot has an old corn mill in the heart but wander south away from the mill to find the little old church by the river. The only
While the main A595 provides a practical gateway, the real draw of Eskdale Green lies in the network of footpaths that thread through the surrounding fells. A short, unmarked climb from the village leads to the ancient stone circles on the moorland, offering a quiet alternative to the busier lakeside walks further east. Early autumn is ideal: the heather begins to bloom, and the lower valleys fill with the scent of damp earth, a subtle cue for seasoned walkers to linger longer before heading back to the pub.
The village’s inns and cafés are run by families who have lived in Eskdale for generations, meaning menus feature locally sourced lamb and isle of Man cheese rather than the standard tourist fare. Ask for the afternoon tea served with a slice of Eccles cake baked at the nearby bakery—its recipe has changed little since the 1800s. This focus on community produce gives visitors a taste of genuine Cumbrian rhythm, far removed from the polished eateries found in larger market towns.
Eskdale Green’s calendar is marked by agricultural events that colour the village’s daily life. In late spring, the fields transform into a patchwork of newly planted seedbeds, and the sound of sheepdog trials can be heard echoing across the valley. Winter brings the modest, but well‑attended, lantern festivals where residents line the lanes with candles, creating a warm glow that highlights the stone cottages. Timing your visit to coincide with these periods offers a subtle immersion into the rhythm of rural Cumbria.

Historically in Cumberland, it lies off the A595 road and is one of the few settlements in Eskdale.
[edit] The village is centred on the small St. Bega's Church and hall. Since 1950 the Outward Bound Trust has owned Gate House mansion near the centre of the village, which they operate as an outdoor adventure and education centre for young people. In late summer the grounds of Gate House are the venue for the annual Eskdale Fête. The Gate House grounds used to encompass the Giggle Alley Forest, to the northwest of the village, which is now open to the public and contains 9 hectares (22 acres) of woodland, including a secluded Japanese garden designed by Thomas Mawson.
[edit] The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway has two stations in the village. Eskdale Green station (or The Green) is a short distance to the south of the village centre, while Irton Road station is at the western edge of the village, on the road to Irton Pike.
