El Gouna (الجونة) is a self-sufficient, fully integrated resort town of 24,000 on the Egyptian Red Sea Coast just north of Hurghada. The town offers a large variety of activities and entertainment and is a popular destin
El Gouna’s layout of islands and canals invites a rhythm that feels more akin to a Mediterranean fishing village than a purpose‑built resort. Arriving at sunrise, the soft light reflects off the water, and the early‑hour market stalls open with freshly‑caught sea bass and locally grown herbs. Walk the narrow promenades and you’ll discover family‑run cafés that have been handed down for generations, offering a taste of everyday Egyptian hospitality far from the glossy hotel corridors. For the curious traveller, joining a local fisherman’s crew for a few hours on a traditional felucca provides insight into a livelihood that predates the resort’s founding, grounding the visit in the region’s maritime heritage.
While the Red Sea’s coral reefs are a draw, the surrounding desert offers a contrasting palette of sand dunes and ancient oases. Guided quad‑bike tours that skirt the protected marine park allow you to watch nesting sea turtles from a respectful distance, then head inland to explore Bedouin settlements where tea is served in hand‑painted glasses. Birdwatchers will find winter migratory species nesting in the lagoons, a subtle reminder that the area’s biodiversity extends beyond marine life. Choosing operators that partner with local conservation groups ensures that the adrenaline‑filled outings contribute to habitat preservation and support community‑based initiatives.
The annual El Gouna Film Festival injects a cosmopolitan buzz into the town, attracting filmmakers and critics from around the globe. Visiting during this period transforms the quiet promenades into bustling networking corridors, where pop‑up screenings occur in converted warehouses and rooftop terraces. For travellers not interested in the festival’s programme, the peripheral weeks offer a quieter atmosphere yet still benefit from the upgraded transport links and extended restaurant hours introduced to accommodate the influx. Booking accommodation a few streets away from the main lagoon ensures proximity to the action while retaining the serenity of the residential islands.

El Gouna specializes in watersports. There are several beaches including Zeytuna Beach (Egyptian Arabic: شاطئ زيتونة) located on its own island, Mangroovy Beach, Moods Beach and other hotel beaches. There are three main areas in El Gouna, Downtown, Tamr Henna Square (Egyptian Arabic: ميدان تمر حنة) and the Abu Tig Marina (Egyptian Arabic: مارينا أبو تيج). It also has El Gouna Mosque and a Coptic Orthodox church, the Church of St. Mary and the Archangels. In 2017 an annual film festival was established, the El Gouna Film Festival. Founded by telecom billionaire Naguib Sawiris, El Gouna Film Festival was previously attended by globally prominent celebrities including Patrick Dempsey, Sylvester Stallone and Owen Wilson.
