Dolisie, known as Loubomo (or Lubomo) between 1975 and 1991, is a city and a commune. It is the capital of Niari in the south western of the Republic of the Congo, the country's third largest city and an important commercial centre. The city lies on the eastern edge of the coastal rainforest and has a population of 178,172 (2023 census).
Dolisie is divided into 2 urban boroughs (arrondissements): Foundou-Foundou and Youlou-Poungui.
Dolisie's economy is anchored in its role as a railway hub linking Brazzaville with the mineral‑rich interior. While most visitors glance at the bustling market stalls, the surrounding industrial estates reveal a city that churns timber, sugar and petroleum products for the whole region. A short ride eastward brings you to the Niari sugar refinery, where the aroma of cane juice mingles with the hum of conveyor belts—a glimpse into the supply chain that fuels much of southern Congo. For the curious traveller, arranging a walk‑through at the state‑run timber yard (by prior permission) offers insight into how the forest fringe is managed, and why Dolisie remains a logistical linchpin despite its modest size.
The city's position on the edge of the coastal rainforest means the wet season, from October to May, can turn unpaved streets into muddied tracks. Plan your journeys to the nearby waterfalls or botanical reserves early in the day, when the afternoon downpours are less likely to disrupt transport. Local minibusses (taxi‑buses) often adapt routes to avoid flooded sections, and drivers will advise on the safest river crossings. Carry a lightweight waterproof jacket and an extra pair of shoes; the sudden showers are brief but relentless, and they give the surrounding forest an invigorating sheen that brightens any short hike.
Most guidebooks skim over Dolisie's boroughs, but Foundou‑Foundou pulses with a distinct everyday cadence. Here, community centres double as informal classrooms where elders teach youngsters the art of weaving palm leaves into market baskets—a craft that predates the city's railway origins. On Thursday evenings, the neighbourhood's main square fills with a low‑key music scene, where young musicians blend soukous guitar riffs with traditional drums. Observing this scene offers a nuanced view of how urban growth intertwines with cultural continuity, revealing that Dolisie's identity is as much about its neighbourhoods' everyday practices as it is about its commercial stature.

[edit] The city was founded as a station on the Congo-Ocean Railway, and it was named after Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza's lieutenant Albert Dolisie. It became a thriving city thanks to the wealth of the railway, and had 20,000 inhabitants in 1972. The city's name changed to Loubomo in 1975, and it became the third largest city in Congo-Brazzaville. The civil war of the late 1990s caused an exodus of rural people toward cities, and Loubomo's population has significantly increased since then.
[edit] Dolisie is a major rail center. Its location marks the link between the east-west Congo-Ocean Railway and the Mbinda line which runs north to the border with Gabon at Mbinda. Dolisie is also home to numerous small industries (wood, lumber).
[edit] Dolisie is home to Dolisie Airport. Dolisie-Loubomo railway station on the Congo–Ocean Railway provides daily rail service to Pointe-Noire, Brazzaville and intermediate points.
