Bertioga is a Brazilian municipality in the state of São Paulo and part of the Baixada Santista Metropolitan Region. Its population is 64,723 (2020 est.) in an area of 490.15 km2. Because it neighbors resort towns, its population fluctuates greatly with the seasons. The more northern parts are densely forested and unpopulated.
Bertioga’s shoreline offers a subtle contrast to the flamboyance of nearby resort magnets. Early morning walks along the quieter beaches reveal fisherman’s nets still drying in the sea‑breeze, while inland the Atlantic Forest cloaks the hills in a lingering mist. The juxtaposition creates a dual experience: a laid‑back surf culture on the coast that eases into bird‑watching treks through untouched secondary growth. Visitors who time a sunrise paddle‑board session can then retreat to a modest trail that leads to hidden waterfalls, allowing the senses to shift from salty spray to the earthy perfume of orchids and ferns without crossing a municipal boundary.
Although population statistics swing with holiday tides, the true rhythm of Bertiaga is set by its agricultural calendar. Small family farms pepper the hinterland, and during the harvest of sugarcane and citrus, the roads are dotted with rustic trucks and the scent of ripe fruit hangs in the air. Engaging with a local market stall during this period offers insight into the region’s food chain, from field to plate, and gives travellers a chance to taste fresh, unprocessed juices that differ markedly from the tourist‑focused fare found in the beaches farther north.
Bertioga sits within the Baixada Santista metropolitan framework, yet its public transport links remain modest. A practical tip is to lease a small car or use a rideshare service when venturing beyond the immediate beachfront; buses tend to run on a limited schedule, especially on weekdays. For those keen on sustainable travel, bicycle rentals are increasingly popular along the coastal promenade, and a well‑marked bike lane stretches toward the protected forest area, allowing a low‑impact way to explore both maritime and arboreal scenery in a single day.
