Agost (Valencian pronunciation: [aˈɣost]) is a town of 4,700 people (2018) in the province of Alicante, about 18 km from the provincial capital Alicante. For centuries the town has been known for its ceramics.
Nestled just inland from the glitter of the Costa Blanca, Agost offers a rare glimpse of Valencian life before it is coloured by swathes of beach resorts. Its streets are lined with family‑run cafés where the menu still revolves around fresh market produce and paella cooked in the traditional paellera. Walkers will find branching footpaths that climb the gentle slopes surrounding the town, rewarding hikers with views over the palm‑fringed coastline that are impossible to capture from the crowded beachfront. For visitors seeking a calm base from which to explore both the mountains and the sea, Agost’s modest size ensures that the pace remains leisurely and the local rhythms unhurried.
The calendar in Agost is punctuated by modest yet vibrant fiestas that reveal the community’s deep‑rooted customs. In late summer the town organises a “Fira de la Llotja”, a market that showcases regional ceramics and agricultural products, echoing the town’s historic crafts. The night of the patron saint brings a procession of lanterns winding through the old town, culminating in a communal feast of locally sourced rabbit and almond cake. These events are less advertised than the coastal parties, so checking the municipal website or chatting with a shopkeeper for exact dates can let a traveller join the celebrations as a welcomed participant rather than a distant observer.
Because Agost lies within a half‑hour’s drive of Alicante Airport and the city’s historic centre, it works well as a low‑cost lodging hub. Regular bus routes link the town to the coastal highways, making it easy to reach the cliff‑top villages of Altea and Calp without the tourist‑density of beachfront hotels. For cyclists, the relatively flat roads out of Agost provide a gentle warm‑up before tackling the steeper climbs of the Sierra de Bernia. Booking a guesthouse in the centre ensures parking is free and that you can leave early for sunrise hikes, then return for an evening of quiet tapas on a terraced patio.

Due to its relative distance from the Mediterranean Sea, Agost was not directly affected by the mass tourism that the towns on the Costa Blanca experienced, and has maintained its local character. Until the sixties, the economy of Agost was mainly based on pottery and agriculture. Today most of the traditional potteries have closed, or turned into factories producing construction elements. There are still about 11 potteries active in the town; six of them still produce traditional pottery. Agriculture remains a second income source for many families in Agost.
